7th Bn. The Seaforth Highlanders.

Aged 29

 

Youngest son of the late Mr. Kenneth Mackenzie, Knockglass, Achiltibuie.

 

Eductated at Achiltibuie and at Ullapool H.G.P.S.  
Passed with Distinction the Examination for H.M. Customs & Excise.  
Became Clerk and Auctioneer to Murdo Stewart, Kyle of Lochalsh.  
In 1910 he joined the Firm of Thompson, Brown & Co., Buckie  
In July 1914 was offered a most lucrative position as Manager in S. Africa of a Branch of Messrs. Richard Irvine & Sons. He accepted it, but relinquished it upon the outbreak of War and,  
Enlisted in the 4th Seaforths Nov. 1914.
Received a Commission 21st July, 1916.
Posted to the 7th Seaforths  
Killed at Arras 7th Dec. 1917.

 

Lieut.-Col. Horn referred to him as “one of the brightest and most promising young officers in the Bn.,” and many other similar tributes were paid to his memory.

 

“David said it for us all, years ago, and nothing has been said since that can compare : My son, my son, would God I had died for thee, my son."

The official records put his age as being 27 and not 29 as stated above.

 

His grave carries the following inscription: "ACH A TA CROICH, NAN UILE NITHE AM FAGUS, DEANAIBH FAIRE, CHUM URNUIGH."

 

The translation of the Epitaph is the following: “The end of all things is near. Therefore, be alert [and of sober mind] so that you may pray.” (Peter I, ch. 4, v. 7)
