“God, the God or our fathers, gave us a flag to keep:

And a cross for our flag to carry over the circling deep.

We put the blood of our life’s best hopes, and the blue of the Northern sea,

And the white of Christ upon it, and bid the winds blow it free.

Sometimes the stars were with us, - sometimes the heavens were dark;

Sometimes the deep seas clutched us, from battles grim and stark:

But we guarded and kept the message of the brave and the seas, and God,

Till the sifting wind of the Judgement Dawn shall carry our dust abroad.“

- L. M'Lean Watt.
