1916

 

1351. TROOPER NORMAN DUNDONNELL MACKENZIE,

7th Light Horse, Australian Force.

Aged 24

 

Fourth son of the late Hugh Mackenzie of Dundonnell, Ross-shire,

and Terrara, N.S. Wales.

 

Enlisted as a trooper in the 7th Reinforcement
of the 7th Australian Light Force
Oct. 1915.
Killed in action at El Magal after the Battle of Romani 17th Sept. 1916.

 

At the battle of Romani (which was the most important engagement fought within Egyptian territory) the Turks were completely defeated in their attempt to capture the Suez Canal, and in the subsequent rearguard engagement with the retreating Turks the Australian Light Horse greatly distinguished themselves.

Son of Bella Mary and the late Hugh Mackenzie. Native of Bundanon, New South Wales.

 

Extract taken from the official Australian Army Records:

 

“Formal portrait of 1351 Trooper (Tpr) Norman Dundonnell Mackenzie of Nowra, NSW, 7th Australian Light Horse Regiment. A grazier when he enlisted, Tpr Mackenzie embarked with the 10th Reinforcements at Sydney aboard HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 5 October 1915. Tpr Mackenzie brought all his own riding gear with him to war; his mount was a strong chestnut horse, bred at Terrara, NSW, near Nowra. While engaged in operations in Egypt, Tpr Mackenzie was wounded in action at Nabit on 17 September 1916. Having sustained a gunshot wound to the head, he was admitted to 2nd Light Horse Field Ambulance, Bir el Mazar, but died of his wounds that same day. He was 24 years old.”
