William Mackenzie RNR from Ardindrean was a yachtsman/fisherman like his father Kenneth and brother John. They and Kenneth’s wife Bella had the croft house now named Rowan Cottage. William was not so young as many who joined at once, but was an experienced seaman and, as was often the case, in the Naval Reserve.

He served in HMS Grafton, an Edgar class cruiser with a crew of 544 which took part in the Gallipoli campaign . William was taken ill and died of malaria on 1st December 1915. He was aged 42 and was buried at sea in the Aegean.
