5896. PTE DONALD MACLEOD,

2nd Bn. Scots Guards.

Aged 31.

 

Son of the late Mr. Alexander Maclean, Coast, Inverasdale, Poolewe, and
Mrs. Maclean, The Gardens, Leckmelm.

 

Enlisted in the Scots Guards 1904
Upon transfer to Reserve joined the Metropolitan Police. -
Mobilized August, 1914

 

His Commanding Officer wrote of him:- “I am told that he did very well in the Company, setting an excellent example, and performing his duty up to the time that he was last seen.

 

Had two brothers serving –

  • L.-Cpl. Roderick Maclean, 2nd Camerons. Killed, 1916
  • John Maclean, N.Z.I.F.

 

“So this man also died after this manner, leaving his death, for an ensample of nobleness and a memorial of virtue, not only to the young but also to the great body of his nation.” – 2 Maccabees vi. 31 (Revised Version).
